Kailua Beach
Kailua Beach on Oʻahu offers a broad sweep of pale sand, turquoise water and room to wander. This local guide covers Kailua Beach Park, parking, restrooms, swimming, Flat Island and a shoreline walk toward Kalama Beach Park, along with landmarks and local stops that make a beach day easy.

Kailua Beach Park
The main public beach park is the easiest starting point for a day on Kailua Beach. It has public parking areas, restrooms and outdoor rinse showers, plus lawn and shade close to the sand. Parking can fill quickly, especially on busy days; follow posted signs and leave residential driveways and beach access clear.

Use the public lots at the beach park and check posted lot hours. Arriving earlier generally makes parking easier.

Comfort stations and outdoor showers make it convenient to rinse off before leaving the beach.
A local stop
Kalapawai Market sits at the park entrance, a short walk from the beach, for coffee, sandwiches, drinks and beach-day supplies.
On the water
Swimming, the boat ramp & Flat Island
Near Kailua Beach Park, look for the buoy-marked swimming area and pay attention to the posted signs and lifeguards. The buoys help distinguish the swimming space from nearby water activity; their positions and conditions can change. Even here, wind, currents, shorebreak and Portuguese man-of-war can affect a swim. Ask the lifeguard where to enter on the day you visit.
The Kailua boat ramp is nearby. Keep clear of launching and returning vessels, and use the designated swimming area rather than the ramp or boating channel.
Offshore is Popoiʻa, commonly called Flat Island, a protected seabird sanctuary. It is a familiar landmark from this end of the beach. Anyone paddling near it should check conditions and respect the sanctuary signs and restricted nesting area.

A generous stretch of sand
Kailua Beach continues well beyond the main park. A shoreline walk gives you changing views across Kailua Bay, with the Koʻolau mountains inland and Flat Island offshore near the park end. The beach and access points are public; please respect the homes and private property along the shore.
Farther along the beach
Kalama Beach Park
Kalama is a smaller public beach park partway along Kailua Beach, with a grassy area, limited parking and restrooms. It offers another access point to the same long shoreline, away from the main Kailua Beach Park entrance. Check posted hours at the lot and comfort station before planning an early or late visit.
The City describes Kalama as a 4.28-acre park and home to the historic Boettcher Estate. It is a useful stop on a beach walk, with the same need to assess ocean conditions before entering the water.
Plan your beach day
Start near Kailua Beach Park for the easiest access to facilities and Kalapawai Market. For a longer walk, continue toward Kalama and the residential stretches of beach. Bring water, sun protection and a way to carry out everything you bring in.
